How to Choose Your First Safety Razor?
New to safety razors? Here’s what to look for for a smooth, stress-free shave:
1. Weight & Handle Design
Heavier Razors (Silver)
These are great when you’re shaving larger, flatter areas like your legs. Their extra weight helps the razor stay in contact with your skin, so you don’t have to press hard to get an even shave. It’s a smooth, consistent glide that works well on broad surfaces.
Lighter Razors (Rose Gold/Black):
Perfect for smaller or more curved areas like knees, underarms, or the bikini line. Their lighter design gives you more control in tight spots, making it easier to maneuver around curves.
Quick Tip: Never used a safety razor? Start with lightweight – it feels closer to disposable razors!
2. Closed Comb vs. Open Comb
Our razors use a closed comb design that keeps the blade safely behind a built-in guard. This design means fewer nicks and less irritation, giving you a smooth, easy shave every time. It’s a straightforward, reliable choice. Perfect if you’re new to safety razors or have sensitive skin.
3. Blade Changes Made Simple
Our razors use a single-blade and have a butterfly open mechanism making swapping blades effortless:
1. Twist the bottom handle – head opens like butterfly wings.
2. Drop in a new double edge blade.
3. Twist closed – ready to shave!
No screws, no fuss. Safer and faster than traditional designs.

Safety Razor FAQs
Getting Started with a Single Blade
Which safety razor is best if I’m new to using one?
Our lightweight butterfly-open safety razors (like the Rose Gold or Black models) are ideal for beginners. They’re lightweight, easy to maneuver, and feature a simple twist-to-open design for effortless blade changes. The closed comb head protects skin from the blade, reducing nicks and irritation – perfect for first-time users transitioning from disposable razors
The Silver safety razor’s weight (20% heavier than our Rose Gold/Black models) helps it glide effortlessly over large, flat areas like legs or cheeks, reducing the need to press down – a common mistake that causes razor burn. For men with thick beards, the weight tugs less on coarse hair, giving a smoother shave in fewer passes.
How does using a safety razor differ from using a disposable razor?
For starters, a safety razor uses a single, sharp blade, whereas a disposable typically has multiple blades. It might sound odd, but when it comes to shaving, less really is more! Your skin actually prefers a single blades clean cut over several blades dragging across it.
With a safety razor, you don’t need to apply pressure; you let the razor’s natural weight do the work. In contrast, with disposables, you often push the razor into your skin to get a close shave. Even the angle you hold the razor at is different.
But don’t worry, it’s super easy to learn. Our razors feature a curved head that naturally helps you find the right angle, making your transition to a safety razor smooth and comfortable.
What areas of my body can I shave with a safety razor?
You can use a safety razor almost anywhere - on your face, legs, and even in delicate areas like the bikini line. However, because safety razors require a bit more technique, it’s best to start on larger, flat areas of your body.
These areas give you a chance to learn the correct angle and pressure without worrying about curves or sensitive skin. Once you’ve practiced on these easier sections, you’ll be confident enough to tackle more detailed areas.
Check out this guide on how to shave your face with a safety razor and this one on how to shave your legs.
What’s the best way for someone new to use a safety razor?
If you’re just starting out, begin by washing your skin with warm water and applying a quality, natural shaving cream to soften your hair. Hold the razor at about a 30-degree angle so that its natural weight applies the pressure rather than you pushing down.
Start with large, flat areas like your legs or face. This will help you get a feel for the proper technique without the added challenge of curves or sensitive spots.
After just a couple of shaves, you’ll build the confidence and skill needed to move on to more sensitive areas like your face or bikini line.
Remember, a gentle approach and taking your time are key to achieving a smooth, comfortable shave.
For Sensitive Skin
Are single-blade razors gentler on sensitive skin?
A safety razor is a great choice for people who have sensitive skin or suffer from ingrown hairs.
If you're looking for a less irritating way to shave, or if ingrown hairs have been a problem for you in the past, try using a double edge razor! Safety razors protect your skin from irritation and ingrown hairs because they use a single blade, which has less friction against the skin, and also doesn't pull or tug at the hair follicle like cartridge razors.
Safety razors don't just protect your skin from irritation and ingrown hairs, they can also save you money. That's because the replacement blades are much cheaper than the multi-blade cartridges that come with other razors, so you can easily change them when they get dull.
How can I reduce razor burn and irritation?
Start by preparing your skin; wash with warm water to soften your hair and open your pores (I recommend at least a 5 minute shower or bath before shaving), then apply a quality shaving cream and let it sit on your skin for 30 seconds to a minute.
When you use your safety razor, let its weight do the work instead of pressing hard against your skin. Shave in the direction of hair growth and rinse the blade frequently to keep it clean.
These simple steps help minimise friction and keep your skin smooth. For more, check out our guide to beating ingrown hairs.
Why do I get razor burn when I shave?
Razor burn is mainly caused by irritation from friction during shaving. Disposable razors often have multiple blades, and while that might sound like it would give a smoother shave, more blades actually create more friction on your skin. This extra friction can lead to a higher chance of irritation, especially if the blades are dull or if you’re pressing too hard.
Another factor is the way disposable razors are used. Since you’re often pushing the razor into your skin to get a close shave, that extra pressure can worsen the friction and contribute to razor burn. In contrast, safety razors use a single, sharp blade that cuts hair cleanly, reducing the number of passes you need and minimising friction.
Another culprit can be the shaving products you use. Many shaving foams and gels contain harsh ingredients like alcohols and sulfates (for example, sodium lauryl sulfate) and synthetic fragrances that can strip moisture from your skin, making it more prone to irritation. These ingredients can disrupt your skin’s natural barrier, leading to dryness and razor burn.
Razor Care
How do you change the blades?
It’s simple! Just twist the bottom of the handle – the head opens like butterfly wings. Remove the old blade, slot in a new one, then twist the handle closed. No screws or tools needed. Watch our 30-second tutorial for a visual guide.
How many shaves can I get from a double edge blade?
Our razors use a double edge blade. This means they have two sides that can cut. So, when one side starts to dull, you can simply flip the blade and use the other side.
Each blade lasts 5-7 shaves, depending on hair thickness. We recommend our 25-Blade Recyclable Pack (£25) for long-term value.
Remember: Dull blades cause irritation, so swap them regularly!
What’s the best way to clean and store my razor?
After each shave, rinse your razor thoroughly under warm water to remove any hair and shaving cream residue. Every now and then, give it a more thorough clean. Using a mild soap can help remove any build-up that water alone might miss.
Once cleaned, gently shake off any excess water and pat the razor dry with a soft towel. Then, for optimal care, let it air dry completely. Investing in a razor stand or holder is a great idea. It keeps your razor upright so that water drips off quickly, reducing moisture on the blade. This not only helps prevent rusting of the blades but also prolongs their sharpness and effectiveness.

Sustainability
Are your safety razors eco-friendly?
Yes, our safety razors are completely plastic-free. We build them with durable, high-quality metal that’s designed to last a lifetime. This commitment to metal construction helps you avoid the single-use plastics found in many disposable razors, making your shaving routine more eco-friendly.
In addition, our razors use fully metallic double edge razor blades.. We also offer a FREE blade recycling bin with most of our razor kits – meaning you can recycle used blades easily from home.
How do safety razors help reduce waste?
Safety razors are designed to last a lifetime, so you only need to replace the blade, not the entire unit. This means you’re not contributing to the massive waste stream created by disposable plastic razors.
In fact, over 2 billion plastic razors are thrown away each year, and they’re nearly impossible to recycle.
By choosing a safety razor, you significantly cut down on plastic waste and help create a more sustainable shaving experience.
Do you offer any blade recycling programs?
Our safety razor kits include a free blade recycling bin that holds about 50 used blades, making recycling simple. Once the bin is full, just pop it into your household recycling, though we recommend checking with your local council for detailed guidance. This easy solution ensures that when you replace your blade, you’re not adding to landfill waste.
